The country has been caught up in Lottery fever for a few weeks. The idea of 1.5 billion dollars is enough to cause a national frenzy.  But when thinking about it, I went back to this weeks episode of iHeart Radio’s Boomer’s Yak About where we discussed; Why are baby boomers not being marketed to? Which featured John Mallen, founder & CEO of JMCPR Marketing and Communications as my guest.

Over the next two decades or so, The 50+ will inherit about two trillion dollars, the greatest transfer of wealth in history. And yet, we only hear how great the networks are at achieving their target goals of reaching 25-54.

More Disposable Income is a big part of how money buys power today.

Yes, they are prone to spending on anything that is marketed well to them. But the 50+ have more disposable income than all the other generations put together. It takes a different strategy and creative to reach this demographic. But if I were in health and fitness, travel, cooking, and maybe even golf or tennis, I’d be all over this demographic with everything I’ve got.

Despite the extraordinary financial power of the 4664’s (Boomers), only about 15% of advertising dollars are spent on this demographic according to Nielsen.

The study reveals that brands don’t want to be perceived as being “for old folds,” but boomers don’t think of themselves as old. They look in the mirror and still see 25 and with the exception of a few ailments here and there, they are generally in better health than any generation that came before them.

How money buys power and where that power spending money.

You may not see them in the night clubs, but they will be in your gyms, Zumba classes, at the galleries having cocktails, working it off in Yoga and dressed in the latest age appropriate clothes – (maybe not fashion forward), but looking good.

Don’t expect this generation to look like your great grandparents – as they will probably leave this planet looking in their 40’s or 50’s.

This generation will not fade out, the will continue to wrestle control of the world around them. The millennial will have a fight on their hands.

Weekly Social Media Content Plan for the Boomers Yak About Shows.

Following each Boomers Yak About Show, six additional days of content will be posted in the form of videos, blogs, additional audios, pictures, links and advertisements to reinforce the topic, guest or business from that weeks show.

Weekly Social Media Content Plan: Advantages

With a weeks worth of additional content being promoted, the radio show will serve as the home or anchor for conversations and content that will be released and staggered through the week. This includes the use of different multimedia formats on the web and on social media. The posting of a blog, video, audio clip, photo or link six days following helps to promote that week’s radio program while optimizing and reinforcing the program and associated brands as a whole.“

This creates massive growth in visibility and listenership for each show that is aired. In turn, cross promoting that weeks show, the previous weeks shows and the following weeks show simultaneously”.

Weekly Social Media Content Plan: Example week

While the exact order of content will change with each week, here is an example of content being distributed in a normal week for Boomers Yak About:

  • Monday: The Radio Show (Primary Content) airs on terrestrial radio and is available through Internet radio and is also posted on the station and hosts website as well as all key social media pages. It is also delivered for use and uploaded for the sponsor, guest or client to use.

    Tuesday: The Video that was shot after the show or video tying in to a topic, guest, sponsor or advertiser from that show is uploaded to YouTube, optimized for keyword phrases and searches, and then posted across all key social media pages.

    Wednesday: The Picture chosen for the show that week is optimized with the correct keywords and text to tie back to the client, sponsor or guest and is then posted first on Instagram, then shared across all key social media sites.

    Thursday: The Blog adds depth to the subject of the show and is written to highlight the show. The other multimedia supporting the topic, the guest or client, are optimized and shared across all key social media sites.

    Friday: The Audio clip (in addition to the show) is optimized and uploaded to SoundCloud as extra materials from the original show and shared across all social media.

    Saturday: The Link and descriptors for a product, person or business that pertains to that weeks show is optimized and highlighted as a secondary source, then it is shared on all social media sites.

    Sunday: An Advertisement from the sponsor, advertiser or a promotional spot for the next show is created, optimized and is shared across all key social media.            

    By adding social media and continuing the discussion with additional content spread across numerous forms of multimedia on numerous channels for the whole week, the engagement and conversations continue after every radio show. This allows for listeners to dig deeper in to each topic as well as allowing sponsors and advertisers to be seen that much more often and by a greater number of people”.
